What to expect

Appointments

The service operates a triage system. This means when you call for an appointment, a member of the reception team will ask you for some details, and then transfer you to speak to a sexual health nurse. The nurse will ask you a few questions to help decide when you need to be seen or if another service is more suited to your needs. The service offers appointments via telephone, and face to face in Dundee and Perth.

Sexual Health appointments for adults in the whole of Tayside can be made by phone (phone 01382 425542 Monday – Friday between 9 am and 12 noon.) and some appointments can now be booked online using our Online Booking System.

Contraceptive Implant

Insertion: Please note that we may not fit an implant if we feel that you are at high risk of being already pregnant. If your implant is not for contraceptive reasons please contact your GP or Practice Nurse in the first instance.

Removal: This appointment is not suitable for individuals who have had a failed implant removal at another service or who cannot feel their implant. In these circumstances please speak with your GP who will refer you.

Young People’s Telephone Appointments

If you are aged 13-18 in Tayside, you can pre-book a short telephone appointment to speak with a nurse about contraception and sexual health. The nurse will give you advice and book you a face-to-face appointment if you need it. When we call you, it’s best if you’re somewhere private so that you can speak freely. We’ll send you a text confirming the time of your telephone appointment.

Repeat PrEP Appointments

Please be aware that this is a telephone appointment. You will be called at your appointment time. This service should only be used by individuals who are currently taking PrEP without any problems. If you would like to be assessed for PrEP or were previously on PrEP medication and wish to restart please phone 01382 425542 (Monday – Friday between 9 am and 12 noon.) to speak to a member of nursing staff who will ensure you are appointed to see the most appropriate clinician.

Before you attend

Before attending, please check the clinic address and postcode when booking and again in your confirmation text.

Please ensure that you leave plenty of time for parking, as it is limited and very busy across both clinics.

For bus and train routes please check:

When you attend any TSRH service you can expect to have your care and treatments carried out in a confidential and sensitive manner and expect to be listened to without being judged.  All services are free, including your prescription if needed. At TSRH we provide different types of appointments depending on your need.  Appointment lengths can vary from 10 to 60 minutes. At your appointment we will do our best to ensure we care for your needs but on some occasions we might ask you to come back to another appointment as part of the service we offer.

If we have sent you a letter prior to your appointment we will have included all the relevant pre-appointment information you require.

Yes, you can bring someone along for support. The nurse or doctor will want to speak to you alone to begin with, but can call on your support if needed during your appointment.

When you arrive you will be welcomed by a receptionist who will ask for your name. The receptionist will let the clinical staff know you have arrived electronically. You will then be asked to take a seat in our waiting area. You will then be called in for your appointment by your first name.

We do our best to ensure that you will be seen as close to the appointment time you have been given. Unfortunately there are occasions where that might not happen. If you attend for an appointment and have waited 15 minutes and have not been called, please notify a member of reception who will be able to find out what is happening for you. As we have more than one clinic running at a time, you may be taken after a person who arrived later than you.

We know that there are occasions when patients may be late for their appointment. If you arrive late for your appointment we cannot guarantee that we will be able to honour the full length of your original appointment. When you arrive late for your appointment the receptionist will arrange for a member of the clinical team to come and speak to you. You may have to wait until someone is available. For some clinics and procedures we are unable to see you if you are late. If this happens we will arrange an alternative appointment with you.

Most of our services are staffed by a team of clinicians, who might be doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, or health advisors, depending on the service. All our staff will introduce themselves to you when you are called into the clinical room.

If you have a preference to see a particular gender of clinician please let us know when you are booking your appointment. We will try to honour that request whenever we can but cannot guarantee it.

TSRH staff may ask personal and sensitive questions so that they can manage your care effectively during your visit. Staff are not there to judge you. Anything you say will be kept confidential, unless you are being referred to another service with your permission or in very rare situations if the staff need to share information for your own protection. What you tell our staff isn’t going to shock or embarrass them, but you need to be honest so that they know how best to treat, support or advise you.

We will hold an electronic record of your visit that is confidential to sexual health services. It will only be shared with your GP or other services if you give permission.

We rarely share information without your consent but may do so in the following circumstances:

  • where there is a legal requirement (for example if you have an infection that could put others at risk e.g. Meningitis)
  • where a child or vulnerable adult may be in need of protection or at risk of harm
  • to aid the police in the prevention or detection of a serious crime.

We would make every attempt to contact you to tell you what information had been disclosed and to whom.

You may need to provide a urine or blood sample. Some tests require swabs to be taken from your genitals and, depending on what type of sex you have had, from your throat and rectum. This can be a little uncomfortable but the clinical staff are experts at doing these tests so you are in good hands. Some tests may require the doctor to look at your genitals. If you are more comfortable with a doctor of the same gender please let us know when you are booking your appointment.

You can phone for your results after 1 week.

It is our recommendation that you do not bring your children/dependants when attending for an appointment and that you arrange for someone else to look after them.

During a sexual health consultation, we need to ask you a number of questions about your sexual history and some of these are of a very sensitive nature which may not be suitable to discuss in front of children/dependants.  A consultation room is also a medical environment with lots of equipment that may pose a hazard, particularly for young children/toddlers, who would be unsupervised if you require an examination/procedure.  It therefore means if we are unable to complete the consultation appropriately and safely we may not be able to proceed with your appointment when you attend.

Our clinicians’ priority when you attend TSRH is to you as our patient and we must ensure you are safe and well at all times.

If the appointment does not proceed your clinician will ensure that when you leave you will have a clear plan of what will happen next.

At your visit, you may have had some tests for sexually transmitted infections. You can get your results for these tests by phoning our automated telephone results line on 01382 425 542.

You will need your clinic (NaSH) number to get your results. You will have been given a results card when you had your tests with your NaSH number on it, as well as the date of the tests and the tests taken. You should keep this card and your clinic number safe and not share it with anyone to avoid others getting your test results.
